May 9, 2015-Emporia State scored five runs in the first inning and added a home run in the seventh to secure a 6-5 win over Washburn in the elimination bracket game at the MIAA Tournament. With the win the Hornets advance to the MIAA Championship game against #17 Missouri Southern.
The first nine batters reached base for Emporia State in the first with two eventually getting out on fielder's choices. Washburn answered with three in the top of the second and added another run in the fourth. Dean Long launched his 22nd home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh to give the Hornets an insurance run.
Shawn Talkington came on in the seventh and allowed one run over the final 3.0 innings to pick up his 12th save of the year.
The Hornets, who won their ninth elimination game in the last two years, will need to defeat Missouri Southern twice to claim back to back MIAA Tournament Championships.
