April 10, 2015-Emporia State used solid pitching and RBI from five different players on the way to a 5-4 win over Northwest Missouri on Friday at Trusler to open the four game series.
Northwest scored right off the bat when Nick Gotta led off the game with a double and came home on Paul Johnson's one out single. Emporia State answered quickly when Justin Harris led off the bottom of the first with a walk and came around to score on Jonny Hodges double. Hodges went to third in a wild pitch and scored on Dean Long's sacrifice fly to give the Hornets a 2-1 lead. Harris drove in Levi Parker with a single in the second to put Emporia State up 3-1.
Hornet starter Travis Hendry gave up singles to Derek Meyer and Garrett Fort before Johnson unloaded a three run homer to give the Bearcats a 4-3 lead in the top of the third. Hendry then got a strike out and fly out to end the inning. Long led off the bottom of the inning with a double and was joined on the bases by Evan Koehler who was hit by a pitch. Price Jacobs doubled in Long and Cody Bobbit followed with an RBI single that plated Koehler and gave the Hornets the lead.
That would be all the scoring in the game. Hendry settled down and allowed just two hits over his final 4.2 innings. Jacob Tetuan held the lead with a perfect eighth that included two strikeouts and Shawn Talkington pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, punctuated by a called third strike to end the game, for his sixth save in ten relief appearances.
Harris was three for four with a run and an RBI while Jacobs and Bobbit each had two hits and an RBI.
The Hornets and Bearcats will continue their series on Saturday with a double header starting at 1:00 p.m. on Glennen Field at the Trusler Sports Complex.
