February 25, 2015-Kelly Moten tied her career high with 24 points and Kathryn Flott had a double double with 12 points and a career high 14 rebounds in #12 Emporia State's 62-58 win over #11 Pittsburg State on Wednesday in White Auditorium.
The Lady Hornets scored the first six points of the game and never trailed as they swept the season series from the Gorillas for the first time since 2008-09. An Addie Lackey three-pointer gave the Lady Hornets a 20-8 lead with 12:30 left in the half. Emporia State did not score over the last 2:47 of the half, but held Pittsburg State to just four points in that time as the Lady Hornets took a 38-32 lead into the locker rooms.
The Gorillas would close to within two points at 55-53 with 4:08 left but the Lady Hornets would hit seven of ten free throws in the final three minutes to seal the win.
Kelsey Barnwell joined Moten and Flott in double figures with ten points. Merissa Quick added eight points, seven rebounds and three blocks to set the Lady Hornets single season record with 95 blocked shots in her final appearance on Slaymaker Court at White Auditorium.
With the win the Lady Hornets secured the second seed for the MIAA Tournament in Kansas City, Mo. Emporia State will play at 6:00 p.m. in Municipal Auditorium on Friday, March 6.
NOTES
The announced crowd of 3,036 was the third game with at least 3,000 this season and gave the Lady Hornets an MIAA regular season best average of 2,110 fans per game.
