February 21, 2015-The Emporia State men made it to the free throw line 31 times, an MIAA season high for the Hornets, but could only shot 34.9% from the field while giving up 55.1% shooting to Washburn in a 79-54 loss to the Ichabods in Topeka on Saturday night.
The game was tight for the first five minutes with the teams tied 7-7 at the first media timeout. The Ichabods then went on a 10-3 run to take a 17-10 lead with 10:16 left in the half. After a Terrence Moore jumper cut the lead to 17-12, Washburn went on a 10-0 run to go up 27-12 with 7:01 left in the period. The Ichabods would then take a 41-24 lead to the locker rooms.
The lead would stay between 16 and 23 points for most of the second half before the Ichabods settled in for the 79-54 win to earn the split in the season series and take a 103-102 lead all-time in the Turnpike Tussle.
Terrence Moore led Emporia State with 21 points and three steals but only one other Hornet made it to double figures - Perryonte Smith with ten points.
The Hornets will wrap up the regular season on Wednesday against Pittsburg State on Senior Night at White Auditorium. It will be the final home appearance for seniors Perryonte Smith and Nick Mayes. Emporia State needs to pick up a win and have Northeastern State lose their final two games for the Hornets to make the MIAA Tournament.
