November 13, 2015 - Emporia State was swept by #15 Central Oklahoma Friday night in Edmond, Okla. The Hornets were held to 36 kills and a .175 hitting percentage in the three sets.
SLOW START
The first set would have its second and final tie at 2-2 when the Bronchos would go on a run to win the set 25-12. The Hornets were held to only eight kills and a .070 hitting percentage compared to Central Oklahoma's 18 kills on .410 hitting.
SOLID SECOND
In the second set there were eight tie scores and four lead changes. Central Oklahoma would have an early 3-0 lead in the second, all of their points resulting from Hornet attack errors. Emporia State would then go on a 4-1 run to tie it at 4-4 off a kill by Danika Burton. The Bronchos then advanced on a 7-3 run to lead 11-7 from a Hornet attack error. The Hornets fought back, tying it again at 12-12 from a Torrie Rupe kill. The final tie of the set would come at 20-20 off another kill by Danika Burton. Central Oklahoma ended on a 5-1 run to win the set 25-21. Emporia State improved in the second, adding 15 kills.
THIRD AND FINAL
The Hornets had their best hitting percentage in the third set, hitting a .281, compared to the Bronchos .286, but it wouldn't be enough for the win. There were nine tied score and three lead changes in the third set, the largest lead coming at 9-5, an Emporia State advantage. Central Oklahoma went on a 5-1 run to tie the set 10-10 off a Hornet attack error. The two teams battled back and forth until a final tie at 21-21 from a block by Shayla Cotman and Julia Joseph. Central Oklahom took the lead, bring the first match point at 24-22 on a Broncho kill. Emporia State would answer with a Shayla Cotman kill, forcing another match point at 24-23. The Bronchos held on to win the set 25-23 from a Taylor Bevis kill.
THE NUMBERS
Josie Williams had 12 kills on a .346 hitting percentage with three block assists on the night. Danika Burton added another nine kills for a .643 hitting percentage with one solo block and two block assits. Shayla Cotman added another solo block and five block assist for the Hornets. Sydney Hartman had her second game in a row with a double-double, earning 21 assists and ten digs. Kelly Holden had a team high 12 digs on the night.
UP NEXT
The Hornets will end their regular season at Pittsburg State Saturday, Nov. 14 at 6:00 p.m. fighting for the final spot in the MIAA Tournament.
