January 10, 2015-Kelly Moten's three-pointer at the buzzer rimmed out and #1 Emporia State suffered a 62-61 loss at Central Missouri on Saturday afternoon in Warrensburg, Mo. The Lady Hornets had a 60-53 lead with 4:33 left but were outscored 9-1 down the stretch with seven of the points coming from the free throw line for the Jennies.
The game started with UCM scoring the first four points before Emporia State got on the board with 16:33 left in the half. The lead would change hands nine times with four ties before the Lady Hornets ended the half on a 9-2 run to take a 33-27 lead into the break.
Back to back three-pointers by Kathryn Flott and Kyrstie Miller capped an 8-1 run that gave Emporia State a 49-40 lead with 14:09 remaining in the game. An old-fashioned three-point play by Revonnia Howard with 10:11 left cut the Lady Hornet lead to four points at 51-47. Emporia State would hold Central Missouri without a field goal for the next 5:23 but could only add four points to the lead. A Merissa Quick old fashioned three point play with 9:38 left was the only made field goal for either team until the Jennies got another old-fashioned three by Danille Berry. Emporia State answered with a jumper from Ashton Bruner to take a 60-53 lead with 4:33 left.
The Jennies would go six of eight from the free throw line over the next 2:41 to cut the Lady Hornet lead to 60-59 with 1:52 left. Howard gave the Jennies a 61-60 lead on a layup inside with 1:13 remaining. Kelsey Barnwell hit one of two free throws with 58.2 seconds left to tie the score at 61. The teams traded turnovers and Addie Lackey was called for her fifth foul, becoming the third Lady Hornet to foul out, with 4.2 seconds left. Shelby Winkelmann hit the first free throw to give the Jennies a 62-61 lead, but UCM was called for a lane violation on the second to give Emporia State the ball back under the UCM basket. Emporia State got the ball in to Kelly Moten who quickly got the ball into front court, but her threepoint attempt from the left wing rimmed out as the Lady Hornets fell for the first time this year.
Kyrstie Miller led the Hornets with 11 points, eight rebounds and four steals in her first start. She was joined in double figures by Merissa Quick with 11 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Kelly Moten led the Lady Hornets with nine rebounds.
Emporia State will continue their five game road trip on Wednesday at #5 Pittsburg State. Tip-off from John Lance Arena in Pittsburg, Kan. is set for 5:30 p.m.
