Box Score Box Score in htmlSeptember 6, 2014-In a five set match that saw 42 ties, 21 lead changes and three sets that went into extra points, Emporia State scored the final four points to take a 3-2 win over Illinois-Springfield in the final match of the UIS Invite. Carly Spicer had a career high 21 kills and 16 digs to lead the Hornets.
The Hornets fought off two set points in the opener before Josie Williams ace gave Emporia State a 28-26 win. The Prairie Stars came back to take a 25-23 win in the second set before the Hornets won the only set with a more than two point margin 25-21 in the third. Emporia State had two match points in the fourth set before Ill.-Springfield pulled out a 27-25 win to force the fifth set.
The Prairie Stars jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the fifth before the Hornets battled back to take a 10-9 lead. UIS scored five of the next seven points to set up match point at 14-12. A Williams kill pulled the Hornets within 14-13 while Torrie Rupe and Courtney Haring combined on a block to tie the score at 14-14. Rupe's kill off an assist from Spicer gave Emporia State match point at 15-14. Rupe and Haring blocked an attack from Nora Palermo to seal the come from behind win for the Hornets.
Spicer was joined in double figure kills by Williams with 14 and Shayla Cotman with 13 kills. The Hornets had four players with double figure digs as they outdug the Prairie Stars 83-67. Williams and Kelly Holden each had 17 digs, Spicer had 16 and Kimberly Bell had 14 digs. Bell had 32 of the Hornets 63 digs with Katie Deutschmann and Sydney Hartman dishing 13 each. Haring had a team high six blocks, two of them solo for Emporia State.
Emporia State returns to action on Tuesday, September 9 when they host William Jewell in the home opener. First serve from Slaymaker Court in White Auditorium is set for 7 p.m.

Spicer ended the weekend with 58 kills on .320 hitting in the three matches.
