Hornets outgain Bronchos, but have four turnovers in loss

September 20, 2014-Emporia State outgained Central Oklahoma 385 yards to 319 but four Hornet turnovers, two of them in the redzone, led to a 24-14 Broncho win on Family and Friends Day at Welch Stadium.

The Hornets scored first on a 69 yard punt return for a touchdown by Lyndell Johnson with 10:37 left in the first quarter.  It was the first non-blocked punt return for a touchdown by the Hornets since Brian Murphy returned one a school record 82 yards against Western State in 2008.

Jake Gandara scored on a 50 yard rush with 4:22 left in the half for UCO to tie the game at 7-7.  Central Oklahoma made it 10-7 on the second play of the second quarter on a 20 yard field goal by Seth Hiddink.

Brent Wilson hooked up with Austin Willis for a 57 yard pass down to the UCO two yard line with just over nine minutes remaining in the half.  On the next play Jordan Tice fumbled for just the second time in 175 carries and Levonte Douglas recovered it an went 99 yards the other way for 17-7 Broncho lead. It was the first fumble return for a touchdown against the Hornets since Garrett Nikke had one for Ft. Hays State in 2009.

The Hornets had a chance to cut the lead to 17-14 with inder a minute left in the half when Cody Jones intercepted Wilson in the endzone to preserve the ten point lead at the break.

UCO had a chance to add to the lead with 8:28 left but Lear Schrader blocked a 43 yard field goal attempt as neither team scored in the third quarter.

The Bronchos used a short field to go 51 yards on five plays, capped by a 35 yard touchdown pass from Chas Stallard to Josh Crockett with 8:35 remaining.  Jason Tetuan forced a Broncho fumble with 4:22 left that was recovered by Schrader at the UCO 48 yard line. The Hornets scored 1:33 later when Wilson hit Willis for an 11 yard touchdown pass.  The onside kcik attempt did not go ten yards and UCO was able to run out the clock as they improved to 3-0 on the season.

Wilson finished the game 28 of 51 for 255 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. He added a team high 59 yards rushing for 314 total yards of offense.  Willis had seven catches for 125 yards and a touchdown. Deshawn Dinwiddie had 16 tackles, ten of them solo, with 2.5 TFL and a pass break up. Josh Monteguedo joined him in double figures with ten tackles.

The Hornets travel to Tahlequah, Okla. next week to take on Northeastern State.  Kick-off from Doc Wadley Stadium is set for 6:00 p.m.
