Hornets give up 14 points on special teams in loss

September 11, 2014-Emporia State gave up a 97 yard kick off return and a blocked punt for a touchdown in a 50-31 loss at Central Missouri on Thursday evening in Warrensburg, Mo.

The Mules got on top with an 11 yard pass from Hayden Hawk to LaVance Taylor with 7:39 left in the opening frame.  The Hornets responded with an 18 yard pass from Brent Wilson to Reese Richards with 5:33 left. Emporia State went up 14-7 on a 53 yard pass from Wilson to Austin Willis with 4:05 left in the frame.  Taylor returned the ensuing kick off 97 yards to tie the game at 14-14 with 3:51 remaining in the frame.

Taylor made it 21-14 Mules with 3:03 left in the second quarter on a six yard touchdown run.  Wilson found Willis again, this time with 26 seconds left in the half on a 10 yard touchdown pass to send the teams to the locker rooms tied at 21.

Deveon Dinwiddie forced a Taylor fumble and Kadeem Satchell recovered it at the Mules 33 yard line with 8:56 left in the third quarter.  Two plays later Antonio Brown ran it in from four yards out to give the Hornets a 28-21 lead. On the next drive for Central Missouri Taylor took a second and two play 67 yards for a touchdown and a two point conversion on a high snap gave the Mules a 29-28 lead.

The Hornets bad luck on special teams continued in the quarter as the Mules blocked Justin Marcha's punt and Diaron Rhodes returned it 22 yards for a 36-28 lead with 4:26 left in the third. Emporia State cut the lead to 36-31 on an Austin Morton 26 yard field goal with 12:24 left in the game. 

Taylor iced the game with a 75 yard touchdown run with 6:22 left and after a fumble by Emporia State on the kick-off, scored on a 22 yard run with 6:04 left to put Central Missouri up 50-31.

Brent Wilson was 40 of 62 for 489 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions for the Hornets.  Austin Willis finished with eight catches for 178 yards and two touchdowns while Reese Richards had six receptions for 104 yards and a touchdown for the Hornets. Deveon Dinwiddie led Emporia State with 12 tackles, ten of them solo, and an interception. 

LaVance Taylor led Central Missouri with a school record 288 yards and four touchdowns on 23 carries along with a touchdown reception and a 97 yard kick-off return for a touchdown.

The Hornets are back in action on Saturday, September 20 when they play host to Central Oklahoma.  Kick-off for Family and Friends Weekend is set for 2:00 p.m. on Jones Field at Welch Stadium.  The Annual Football Traditions event will follow the game at 6:00 p.m. at the Jenkins Ranch.

NOTES:
Brent Wilson's 40 completions are a school record, breaking Pete Jelovic's previous mark of 39 set against Truman in 1995.
It was the third 400 yard passing game of Wilson's career and the second most yards passing in Emporia State history.
Wilson passed Bob Janesko for fifth on the Emporia State career passing chart and now has 3,830 yards in 21 games.
Willis now has eight career touchdown passes of over 50 yards with seven of his last 13 touchdowns going for at least 50 yards.
It was the first time Emporia State has had both a punt return and kickoff return for touchdowns against them in the same game since Nov. 10 2001 against Northwest Missouri.
