Box Score in htmlMay 3, 2014-The Emporia State women's tennis season came to an end with a 5-0 loss at #33 Augustana in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday. Three of the unfinished matches went to tie breakers in their first set.
The Vikings swept the doubles competition to get the day started. Nicole Jara and Tawni Griffey fell 8-5 at #1, Somer Schmidt and Amy Fugit dropped an 8-4 decision at #3 while Taylor Smith and Jennifer Gerhardt lost 8-2 at #2 doubles.
Singles play began with Fugit falling 6-1, 6-4 at #6 and Augustana clinched the dual as Griffey lost 6-4, 6-4 at #2 singles. Gerhardt was up a set after taking a 7-6 (7-3) win in the first set at #4 singles. Smith and Schmidt both dropped first set tiebreakers at #3 and #5 singles respectively. Jara was up 5-4 in the second set after falling 6-4 in the first set at #1 singles.
Emporia State ends the season 16-9 overall after advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in school history and the first time since 2008.
