April 8, 2014-After a weekend that saw them play three of four duals against nationally ranked opponents, the Emporia State tennis teams will play their final combined home duals of the season on Wednesday against Rockhurst. Both duals will begin at 12:00 p.m. at the EHS Courts.
The Hornet women are 13-5 on the year with their last two losses against teams ranked in the top 30 nationally. Tawni Griffey is a team best 14-4 on the season in singles with a 6-1 record at #1 and an 8-3 record in #2 play. The duo of Somer Schmidt and Amy Fugit are a team best 13-5 with an 11-5 record at #3 doubles.
The Emporia State men are 8-5 on the season. Andrew Davids and Diego Prudencio are both 8-5 on the year in singles. Prudencio has played all of his matches at #1 while Davids has split time at #2, #3 and #4 with a perfect 5-0 record at #2 singles. The doubles team of Collin Connor and Payton Hays have the best record for the Hornets at 5-6, including a 4-6 record at #3 doubles.
The Rockhurst men are 7-4 and the women are 6-4 on the year. The women are 3-0 against MIAA competition taking wins from Missouri Western, Lindenwood and Washburn. The Hawk men are 3-1 against the MIAA with wins over Lindenwood, Washburn and Neb.-Kearney and a loss at Southwest Baptist.
Emporia State will travel west and north this weekend. The women will play Ft. Hays State on Friday while the men take on Hastings. Saturday the two teams will rejoin for MIAA duals at Neb.-Kearney before ending the weekend with non-conference duals at Neb. Wesleyan on Sunday.
