Box score in htmlApril 25, 2014-The Emporia State women's tennis team swept the doubles and Somer Schmidt won in straight sets at #5 singles to give the Hornets a 5-1 win over Central Oklahoma and advance to the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament on Friday in Springfield, Mo.
The Bronchos were playing down two spots due to the loss of a player before the tournament and the Hornets took advantage. Tawni Griffey and Nicole Jara won 8-0 in #1 doubles while Jenny Gerhardt and Taylor Smith took an 8-2 decision at #2 doubles.
Jara fell 6-0, 6-3 at #1 singles right before Schmidt came through with a 6-2, 6-1 win at #5 to clinch the win.
Emporia State will take on Northeastern State in the semifinals on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Cooper Tennis Center in Springfield, Mo.
The Hornet men lost both matches in Springfield on Friday. Emporia State's #1 doubles team of Diego Prudencio and Keenan Smith picked up wins in both duals, but that was all the Hornets could muster in a 5-1 loss to Neb.-Kearney in the first round and a 5-1 loss to Lindenwood in the consolation finals.
