Women's Box Score in htmlMen's Box Score in htmlMarch 29, 2014-In a match up of four regionally ranked teams, the Emporia State tennis teams split a pair of duals with Northwest Missouri on Saturday at the EHS Courts. The Hornet women came from behind to post a 5-4 win while the Hornet men fell 9-0 to the nationally ranked Bearcats.
The Hornet women were ranked ninth in the ITA Regional rankings and the Bearcats were seventh entering the dual. Emporia State jumped in front to start the dual as Nicole Jara and Tawni Griffey won their match at #1 singles 8-4 over NWMSU's Lorena Rivas Jarolim and Alexis Bartek. The Bearcats evened the dual with an 8-2 win at #3 doubles and took the lead with a 8-6 win at #2 doubles.
Amy Fugit started singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #6 for the Hornets only to see Stephanie Mannix give the Bearcats the lead back with a 6-3, 6-1 win at #4 singles. Jara pulled Emporia State even at 3-3 matches each with a 6-4, 6-3 win at #1 singles. Aniek Kolen put Northwest within a match of winning the dual with a 6-4, 6-1 win at #3 singles. Tawni Griffey kept the Hornets in the match with a 7-5, 6-3 win at #2 singles and Somer Schmidt clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win at #5 singles.
With the win the Hornets improved to 12-3 overall and 5-1 in the MIAA.
The Emporia State men, who entered the dual ranked tenth in the ITA Regional rankings, were swept by Northwest Missouri, who is ranked 16th in the nation and first in the region by the ITA. The duo of Payton Hays and Collin Connor had the closest match, falling 8-6 at #3 doubles. Jonathan Butron had the closest individual match dropping a 6-4, 6-2 match at #3 singles.
The Emporia State men are now 8-4 overall and 0-3 in the MIAA.
The Hornet women are back in action on Friday, April 4 against Lincoln at the Milton Courts. Both teams will be back at the EHS Courts on Saturday, April 5 to take on Southwest Baptist.
