March 15, 2014-The Emporia State men and women both picked up wins against different opponents on Saturday in St. Louis, Mo. The Hornet men shut out a depleted Fontbonne squad 9-0 while the Emporia State women picked up a 6-3 victory over Maryville.
The men's team did not drop a game in their win against Division III Fontbonne.
The women led 3-0 after doubles with two of the matches coming down to the end. Nicole Jara and Tawni Griffey won 8-2 at #1 doubles. Taylor Smith and Jenny Gerhardt won 9-7 at #2 while Somer Schmidt and Amy Fugit took an 8-6 victory at #3 doubles. The Hornets clinched with straight set wins by Griffey at #2 and Schmidt at #5 singles before Fugit wrapped up the match with win in the third set at #6 singles.
Emporia State was scheduled to play at Quincy on Sunday but with the forecast for temperatures below freezing with snow those matches have been canceled.
