Hornets get win over nationally ranked opponent

March 9, 2014-The Emporia State women's tennis team took a decisive 6-3 win over #35 Northeastern State on Sunday afternoon at the Milton Courts.  

The Hornets took a 2-1 lead thanks to wins at #1 and #3 doubles.  Nicole Jara and Tawni Griffey defeated Maria Lodge and Lucia Cerchlanova at #1 doubles while the #3 team of Somer Schmidt and Amy Fugit took an 8-5 win over Kristina Savchenkov and Kate Nesbitt.

The Riverhawks went ahead 3-2 with wins at #1 and #3 singles before Schmidt picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win over Lodge at #4 singles to tie the dual.  Tiffany Khounsombath defeated Nesbitt 6-3, 6-1 at #6 to give Emporia State a 4-3 lead and Tawni Griffey clinched the win with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win at #2 singles over .  Fugit then got the sixth win with a come from behind 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win at #5 singles over Cerchlanova.

The Hornets are back in action on Wednesday for a Turnpike Tussle match against Washburn.  First serve is set for 2:00 p.m. on the Washburn campus.  The Emporia State men will play Washburn on Monday at 2:00 p.m. in Topeka.
