Hornets secure home court for MIAA Tournament

February 22, 2014-Kaleb Wright had 30 points to lead four players in double figures as Emporia State defeated Washburn 88-76 on Senior Night at White Auditorium.  With the win the Hornets have secured a home court game in the first round of the MIAA Tournament on March 4.

Emporia State jumped out to a 13-2 lead to open the game and never trailed in the contest.  Washburn stayed close most of the half and scored the final five points of the period to send the teams to the locker rooms with Emporia State leading 38-34.

A 9-2 run to start the second half that was capped by back to back steals and break aways by Terrence Moore and Wright forced Washburn to use their third and fourth timeouts in the first two minutes of the second half as White Auditorium roared. The Ichabods cut the lead to 65-62 with 9:52 left  when the Hornets went on an 11-3 run to push the lead back to double figures.

The Hornets would lead by as many as 19 points when Wright hit a three with 2:12 left to become the first Hornet to score at least 30 points in five games in a season since Sean Robbins had six in 1994-95.

Wright was joined in double figures by Moore with 18, Paul Bunch with 16 points, and Gavin Brown with 14 points.  Bunch led the Hornets with nine rebounds while Moore dished four assists and had three steals.

Emporia State will wrap up the regular season at Pittsburg State on Wednesday, February 26.  Tip-off from Lance Arena is set for 7:30 p.m.
