November 7, 2014-Emporia State's Shayla Cotman went ten of 11 on the attack to lead the Hornets to a 3-0 sweep of Southwest Baptist on Friday night in White Auditorium. Emporia State has now won five of their last seven matches.
The Bearcats jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the match only to see the Hornets respond with a 6-1 run to tie the first set at 6-6. There would be 12 more ties and three lead changes in the first before Emporia State used a 4-0 run to take a 22-20 lead. Back to back kills from Katie Deutschman and an ace from Kelly Holden gave the Hornets a 25-22 win in the opener.
The second set started out close as well with ties at 1-1, 2-2 and 3-3 before the Hornets took control with a 6-0 run that saw Cotman get two kills and two block assists. Emporia State would lead the rest of the night as they cruised to a 25-18 win in the second set and a 25-15 win to close out the sweep in the third set.
Cotman had ten kills on .909 hitting with four block assists for Emporia State. She was joined in double figures by Deutschman with 11 kills on .391 hitting. Carly Spicer added six kills, 14 digs and three blocks while Kelly Holden recorded 14 digs to match her for team honors. Kimberly Bell dished a team high 22 assists as Emporia State hit a season's best .378 as a team.
The Hornets are back in action on Saturday night when they play host to Pittsburg State. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. at White Auditorium.
