November 3, 2014-Emporia State led Kansas State 50-49 with 1:06 left but the Big 12's Wildcats scored the final five points to post a 54-50 win in Bramlage Coliseum. It was the exhibition opener for both teams.
Both teams struggled offensively early with Kansas State holding a 6-3 lead at the first media timeout. Emporia State took their first lead at 11-9 on a layup by Kyrstie Miller with 7:56 left in the half. Neither team took more than a three point lead the rest of the period as the Lady Hornets went to the break with a 22-21 lead.
The second half just as tight with 13 lead changes and eight ties in the second 20 minutes. Addie Lackey scored seven straight points for the Lady Hornets capped by a three pointer at the 3:59 mark to give Emporia State a 47-44 lead. The Wildcats took a 49-47 lead following a Haley Texada three-pointer with 3:03 left and a free throw from Shaelyn Martin with 2:24 remaining. Miller gave the Lady Hornets the lead at 50-49 with a three pointer at the 1:06 mark. Breanna Lewis had an old-fashioned three-point play with 22.6 seconds left to give the Wildcats the lead and Martin hit a pair of free throws with 9.2 left for the final margin.
Lackey led all scorers with 17 points for Emporia State. Merissa Quick had 12 points, nine rebounds three blocks and three steals in 24 minutes off the bench for the Lady Hornets.
Emporia State is back in action on Thursday, November 6 against Evangel in the final exhibition game. Tip-off from Slaymaker Court in White Auditorium is set for 6:00 p.m.
