EMPORIA STATE FOOTBALL FALLS IN TURNPIKE TUSSLE

Hornets commit three turnovers in loss at Washburn

November 1, 2014-Emporia State committed three turnovers and allowed Washburn to hold the ball for over 40 minutes in a 36-10 Ichabod win in the Turnpike Tussle.  It broke a two game Hornet winning streak in the most played active rivalry in NCAA Division II and leaves Emporia State with a 53-52-6 advantage all-time.

The Hornets fell behind 13-0 in the first quarter on a pair of Vershon Moore rushing touchdowns. Emporia State's three possessions in the opening quarter had an average starting point of the Hornet 20 yard line and resulted in three three and outs while Washburn's average starting position was the Hornet 49 yard line and resulted in two touchdowns and a missed field goal.

The Ichabods increased their lead to 23-0 at the half thanks to a 22 yard field goal by Justin Linn and an 85 yard punt return by Moore.  It was the second year in a row that Washburn had returned a punt for an interception. Ty Reasnor replaced starter Braxton Marstall at quarterback following the punt return and twice drove the Hornets inside the Ichabod 30 yard line only to see the drives end with an interception and missed field goal that hit the cross bar at the end of the half

Austin Morton got the Hornets on the board with a 43 yard field goal at the 8:41 mark of the third quarter.  After a missed field goal by the Ichabods, Emporia State drove 73 yards in nine plays and scored on a six yard pass from Reasnor to Kavaski Ervin to pull within 23-10 with :16 left in the third quarter.

Washburn scored on their first two possessions of the fourth quarter around a three and out by Emporia State for the final 36-10 margin.

Reasnor finished the game 12 of 20 for 125 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions.  Ervin had six catches for 75 yards and a touchdown.  Kai Callins led Emporia State with 58 yards on ten carries.  Defensively Deshawn Dinwiddie had 11 tackles including one for a six yard loss and Lyndell Johnson had eight tackles with an 11 yard sack.

The Hornets are back in action on Saturday, November 8 when they play host to #8 Northwest Missouri. Kick-off of the MIAA-TV Game of the Week is set for 2:07 p.m. from Jones Field at Welch Stadium.
