October 31, 2014-Behind three players with double figure kill matches, Emporia State defeated Missouri Southern 3-1 on Friday night in Joplin, Mo. It is the Hornets fourth win in their last five matches.
Katie Deutschmann and Courtney Haring combined for three kills and a block to help Emporia State to a 5-0 lead in the first set. The Lions tied the score at 14 before the Hornets went on a 6-1 run to take control in the 25-21 win. The Hornets then got out to a 4-1 lead in the second set and never trailed in a 25-16 win.
After a 5-5 tie in the third, Mo. Southern took control and cruised to a 25-18 win to force a fourth set. Emporia State trailed 10-8 in the fourth before a 6-0 run gave them the lead for good. A 5-2 run ended the match with a 25-19 Hornet victory.
Carly Spicer led Emporia State with 16 kills and 15 digs. She was joined in double figures by Deutschmann with 13 kills and Haring with 11 kills. Kimberly Bell had 30 assists and 14 digs while Sydney Hartman added 16 assists and Kelly Holden had 13 digs.
Emporia State is back in action on Saturday when they take on Central Oklahoma. First serve in Edmond, Okla. is set for 7:00 p.m.
