EMPORIA STATE VOLLEYBALL UPSETS #19 CENTRAL MISSOURI

Second year in a row the Hornets have upset the Jennies

October 24, 2014-For the second year in a row Emporia State upset Central Missouri, this time with a 3-2 win in Warrensburg, Mo. The Hornets gave the Jennies their first and only loss of the regular season last year in White Auditorium.

The first match was tight through the first 16 points before the Hornets went on a 7-1 run to take a 15-9 lead. Courtney Haring and Katie Deutschmann combined for six of the seven points in the run with Haring getting two solo and a block assist while Deutschmann had two kills and a block assist.  The Jennies came back with a 10-3 run of their own to take a 19-18 lead.  After a Josie Williams kill tied the score, Central Missouri had three straight attack errors followed by a Torrie Rupe kill to give Emporia State a 23-19 lead. Haring finished the match with a kill to give the Hornets a 25-21 win.

Central Missouri scored the first point of the second set but a service error from the Jennies Anne Reilly and a kill by the Hornets Carly Spicer gave Emporia State the lead.  The score would be tied at 2-2 but a Sydney Hartman kill and a block by Shayla Cottman gave the Hornets the lead for good as they cruised to a 25-22 win.

After the intermission Central Missouri went out to a 7-4 lead in the third set.  Emporia State closed to 11-10 on a Spicer kill to force a Jennies timeout.  Out of the timeout UCM scored five straight points on the way to a 25-18 win.  The fourth set was tied at 5-5 when Central Missouri went on a 10-0 run to take control in a 25-12 win to force the fifth set.

The fifth set was tight throughout as neither team took more than a two point lead. With the score tied at 11, Central Missouri's Annie Reilly had an attack error then Haring and Cottman combined on a block to give Emporia State a 13-11 lead and force a timeout from the Jennies. Lauren Dudgeon got a kill for Central to pull within 13-12 by Cottman answered with a kill of her own to give Emporia State match point. Reilly had a kill to avoid the first match point but Mackenzie Harding had an attack error on the next point to give the Hornets the 15-13 win in the deciding set.

Haring, Cottman and Spicer all had 11 kills for the Hornets.  Haring added nine blocks with four of them solo while Spicer had 16 digs for her 12th double-double of the season.  Cottman hit a team high .385 in the match and added three blocks. Kelly Holden again tied her career high with 25 digs.  Kimberly Bell and Sydney Hartman combined for 44 assists with Bell recording 24 and Hartman 20 assists.

Emporia State will now head across Missouri to play at Lindenwood on Saturday night. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in St. Charles, Mo.
