October 18, 2014-Behind true freshman Braxton Marstall, Emporia State outscored Ft. Hays State 21-3 in the second half but could not overcome four turnovers in a 24-21 Hornet loss on Saturday at Welch Stadium in Emporia.

The Tigers took a 7-0 lead on a 52 yard pass from Traveon Albert to Zack Gaughan with 10:28 left in the first quarter. On the Hornets next possession Ty Reasnor threw an interception that the Tigers Ed Brown returned to the Emporia Stte 42 yard line. On the next play Albert found Ed Williams for a 42 yard touchdown pass and 14-0 Ft. Hays State lead with 9:16 left in the opening quarter. A short punt gave the Tigers the ball at the Hornet 44 yard line with 3:00 left in the period.  Eight plays later Edward Smith ran it in from five yards out to give Ft. Hays State a 21-0 lead with 22 seconds left in the opening frame.

Reasnor was injured on the second to last series of the half and was replaced by Marstall after going 13 of 18 for 128 yards. With the Emporia native at quarterback the Hornets took the opening drive of the second half down to the Tiger three yard line before settling for a 20 yard field goal from Austin Morton. Ft. Hays State missed a 47 yard field goal attempt on their next possession and Emporia State went 70 yards in ten plays, capped by a 17 yard touchdown run by true freshman Kai Callins with 2:36 left in the third quarter. On the ensueing kickoff Lyndell Johnson recovered a fumble by Nash Karst, setting the Hornets up at the Tiger 30 yard line.  Morton lined up for a 39 yard field goal that was blocked by the Tigers Brock Long.

The fourth quarter saw both teams trade punts until Seth Culp intercepted Albert with 12:45 left and returned it to the FHSU 19 yard line. Morton connected on a 32 yard field goal to pull Emporia State within 21-13 with 11:40 left in the game. The Tigers answered with a 40 yard field goal that barely cleared the cross bar to go up 24-21 with 8:18 remaining.  The Hornets marched 51 yards on eight plays and scored on Marstall's ten yard touchdown pass to another true freshman Justin Brown with 5:27 left.  The pair hooked up on the two point conversion to pull the Hornets within 24-21.

Emporia State got the ball back with 2:28 left on their own 15 when Nathan Lindsey intercepted Marstall and were able to run out the clock.

Marstall was 11 of 22 for 115 yards and a touchdown while Callins had 24 carries for 101 yards and a touchdown. Brown caught five passes for 52 yards and a touchdown and two point conversion.

The Hornets are back in action next Saturday in the MIAA TV Game of the Week at Missouri Western.  Kick-off is set for 2:07 p.m in St. Joseph, Mo.
