September 6, 2013-Emporia State went 2-0 on the first day of the season in two different ways Friday in Wichita Falls, Texas. The Hornets opened with a 25-20, 25-15, 25-17 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State and came back with a 25-14, 16-25, 20-25, 25-16, 15-12 win over McMurry at the Hampton Inn-vitational hosted by Midwestern State.
Katie Deutschman had nine kills and hit .300 as Emporia State opened the season with a sweep of Northwestern Oklahoma State.  Carly Spicer had seven kills on .429 hitting with two blocks while Courtney Haring had five kills and five block assists on .364 hitting for the Hornets.
The Hornets trailed 2-1 after the third set and were down 11-8 in the fifth set when they stormed back to take the five set win over McMurry. Spicer had two kills during the 7-1 match ending run for Emporia State and ended with 13 kills in the match. Haring added nine kills on .353 hitting with six blocks while Deutschman had nine kills, six assists and six blocks.
Emporia State will continue the stay in Wichita Falls with matches against Southern Nazarene and Southwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday.
