Hornets defeat Griffons in five sets

September 21, 2013-- The Emporia State volleyball team came from behind to defeat Missouri Western 3-2 in White Auditorium on Saturday afternoon. It is the Hornets third win in four five set matches this year.

After dropping the first set 25-20, the Hornets battled back to win the second 26-24.  Emporia State trailed 23-21 and 24-23 in the second before scoring the final three points to even the match at one set each.

The Griffons took the third set 25-22 to take a 2-1 advantage in the match. The Hornets jumped out to a 7-0 lead on Paige Vanderpool's serve on the way to a 25-15 win in the fourth to force a fifth set.

Missouri Western took a 4-0 lead after back to back service aces to start the deciding set and would lead 8-4 before Emporia State began the comeback.  The Hornets would score seven straight points to take an 11-8 lead.  Courtney Haring and Carly Spicer combined for a pair of blocks sandwiched around a Vanderpool kill to start the comeback.Shayla Cotman ended the match with her only kill in the 15-12 victory.

Josie Williams had a career high 18 kills to pace the Hornets while Vanderpool contributed a double-double with ten kills and 15 digs.  Katie Deutschmann added ten kills and Haring had eight kills and seven blocks.  Spicer just missed double figures in kills with nine but added five blocks.

Emporia State will travel to Edmond, Okla. to face the Central Oklahoma Bronchos on September 27.
