September 21, 2013-Sophomore Brent Wilson threw for MIAA records of 522 yards and seven touchdowns and 571 yards of total offense, connecting with Ray Ray Davis for an MIAA record five touchdown catches in Emporia State's 54-38 victory at Central Oklahoma on Saturday night. With the win Emporia State improves to 3-0 on the season before they return to Jones Field at Welch Stadium next Saturday to take on Northeastern State.
The Hornets scored on their first three possessions and led 20-7 after the first quarter. Wilson had three touchdown passes to three different receivers in the opening frame. The first score was a six yard pass to Josh Klumpe that capped a 13 play, 92 yard drive. The extra point was blocked for a 6-0 lead. The Bronchos answered with 48 yard pass from Adrian Nelson to Marquez Clark to put the Hornets behind for the first time this season. On the next play from scrimmage Wilson found Austin Willis for a 67 yard touchdown to regain the lead at 13-6. On Central Oklahoma's next possession Aaron Matthews recovered a fumble at the UCO 21 yard line. Two plays later Wilson hit Davis for the first of his five touchdown receptions on a 20 yard completion.
Josh Birmingham broke the UCO career scoring record in the second quarter when he scored on a three yard run to pull the Bronchos within 20-14 with 10:17 left in the half. That was as close as they would get as Davis and Wilson hooked up on a three yard touchdown to cap another 92 yard drive with 54 seconds left in the half. UCO pulled within ten points on Seth Hiddink's 50 yard field goal with ten seconds left in the half.
Emporia Staet score 24 points in the third quarter to take command of the game. Wilson hit Davis from eight yards out on the opening drive. Then Eli Kuhns hit the first of his two field goals with 8:58 left in the third quarter for a 37-17 lead. Birmingham got the Bronchos on the board in the second half with a seven yard run, but Wilson and Davis answered with a four yard touchdown pass to push the lead back to 44-24 with 5:04 left in the quarter. Birmingham got his third touchdown on a one yard run with 2:19 left in the frame. The Hornets answered again with another Wilson to Davis connection for a 51-31 lead with 55 seconds left in the third.
Kuhns hit a 27 yard field goal with 8:30 left in the game to put the Hornets up 54-31. Adrian Nelson scored the final points for UCO on a six yard run with 5:13 remaining. Gary Fortune ended the Bronchos final scoring threat when he intercepted Nelson with 1:39 left in the game.
Wilson ended the night 38 of 47 for 522 yards and seven touchdowns. He added 49 yards rushing on 11 carries for an MIAA record 571 total yards. Davis had a career high 16 receptions for 181 yards and five touchdowns, but did not have the most receiving yards for the Hornets. Austin Willis had eight receptions for 196 yards and a touchdown. Dozie Iwaugwu led the Hornet rushers with 90 yards on 16 carries.
As a team Emporia State ended the night with 699 yards of total offense, just four yards shy of the school record of 703 set against then Missouri-Rolla in 1997.
Emporia State is back in action on September 28 when they play host to Northeastern State. Kick-off from Jones Field at Welch Stadium in Emporia is set for 1:00 p.m.

Wilson's 522 yards broke the MIAA record of 493 shared by Eric Czerniewski of UCM in 2010 and Matt Ticich of TSU in 2007.
Wilson's seven touchdown passes broke the MIAA record of six shared by seven players.
Wilson's 571 yards of total offense broke the MIAA record of 533 set by Josh Chapman of MSSU in 2002.
