BACK-TO-BACK HOME MATCHES
Emporia State plays its second consecutive home match at White Auditorium when they take on Missouri Western. Coach Bing Xu is going for his 200th career win.

HORNETS DROP MIAA OPENER
The Emporia State Hornets lost a hard fought three setter to the Washburn Ichabods in their MIAA opener 25-21, 25-22, 25-22. Carly Spicer had nine kills for the Hornets, while Katie Deutschmann and Courtney Haring each added eight. Kelly Holden finished with 12 digs in the loss.

THE COACHES
Bing Xu is 199-77 in his ninth year as head coach at Emporia State. Xu has led the Hornets to the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament in five of the last eight seasons. In 2008 he led Emporia State to its first MIAA Championship. He is 13-1 against Missouri Western.
Marian Carbin is 3-6 in her first season as head coach at Missouri Western. The former Griffon player spent four seasons on the coaching staff before taking over the program.

SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Emporia State is 6-3 overall and 0-1 in the MIAA. Courtney Haring is averaging 2.09 kills on .429 hitting and 1.03 blocks per set on the season. Carly Spicer is averaging 2.41 kills per set on .321 hittting. Freshman Josie Williams is averaging a team best 2.48 kills per set on .121 hitting. Kelly Holden leads the team defensively with 4.59 digs per set. Paige Vanderpool is second on the team with a 2.94 average numbers of digs per set.

SCOUTING THE GRIFFONS
The Griffons are 3-6 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA. They opened MIAA play with a four set win over Northwest Missouri 32-20, 26-24, 21-25, 25-19. Kelsy Ollon, Jessie Thory and Erica Rottinghaus each had 12 kills in the win over the Bearcats. Sarah Faubel led the MWSU in digs with 20 in the league victory.

SERIES RECORDS
Emporia State leads the all-time series against Missouri Western 40-37. The Hornets have won the last 10 matches between the two teams. The Griffons last beat the Hornets in a five set decision in the 2006 season.

LAST TIME VS. MWSU
The Hornets defeated the Griffons 28-26, 25-23, 25-20 last year in St. Joseph, Mo. Paige Vanderpool had 20 digs and 7 kills in that match. Courtney Haring had 9 total blocks the last time the two teams met.

IN THE MIAA
Courtney Haring is leading the MIAA in hitting at .433 on the season in the lastest conference report. She is joined in the top ten by Carly Spicer in eighth with a .333 hitting percentage.

UP NEXT
The Hornets will compete on back-to-back nights with road conference games at Central Oklahoma on September 27 in Edmond, Okla., and at Pittsburg State on September 28. Emporia State's next home match is scheduled for October 4, against the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers.
