TURNPIKE TUSSLE
Emporia State makes their 2013 home debut when they take on #11 Washburn in White Auditorium. This is the first time the Turnpike Tussle has been the home opener for Emporia State since 2001. Â

LAST WEEKENDÂ
Emporia State went 2-2 at the Peggy Martin Challenge in Warrensburg, Mo. The Hornets defeated UC-Colorado Springs 3-0 before dropping a 3-2 decision to MSU-Moorhead on Friday. They came back with a 3-2 victory over Winona State and lost their final match 3-0 to then #23 Ferris State on Saturday. Courtney Haring led Emporia State on the weekend with 50.5 points on 41 kills and 15 blocks in the four matches.
THE?COACHES
Bing Xu is 199-76 in his ninth year as head coach at Emporia State. Xu has led the Hornets to the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament in five of the last eight seasons. In 2008 he led Emporia State to its first MIAA Championship. He is 4-13 against Washburn, but 4-4 in White Auditorium.
Chris Herron is 348-61 in his 12th year at Washburn and 423-90 in his 14th year overall. He is 18-6 against Emporia State and 6-6 in White Auditorium.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS Â
Emporia State is 6-2 on the season after going 2-2 last weekend in Warrensburg, Mo. Courtney Haring is averaging 2.03 kills on .433 hitting and 0.90 blocks per set on the season. Carly Spicer is averaging 2.35 kills per set on .333 hittting. Freshman Josie Williams is averaging a team best 2.68 kills per set on .155 hitting. SCOUTING THE ICHABODS Â
Washburn is 6-2 on the season after going 2-2 last weekend in Golden, Colo. They lost a pair of five set matches to Central Washington and Grand Valley State on Friday before coming back with a five set win over Tarleton and sweep of Western Oregon on Saturday. Marissa Cox is averaging a team best 3.53 kills per set on .310 hitting. The Lady Blue name has been retired at Washburn and all teams are now referred to as Ichabods.
SERIES RECORDS Â Â
Like most sports, Emporia State has played Washburn in volleyball more than any other opponent. This will be the 92nd meeting between the two teams with the Hornets holding a 63-28 overall advantage. Emporia State has won eight of 14 matches played in White Auditorium in the 21st century.Â
LAST TIME VS. WU Â Â
Emporia State fell 25-18, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20 to Washburn in White Auditorium. Katie Deutschmann came up just short of recording her second triple double of the season, posting 10 kills, 30 assists and eight digs. Paige Vanderpool led the Hornets attack with 16 kills and completed the double-double with 12 digs. Meg Schwartz led all players with 29 digs.Â

The Hornets will wrap up their quick two match season opening home stand with a match against Missouri Western on Saturday. First serve from White Auditorium is set for 3 p.m. Emporia State will play just nine home matches this season, all against MIAA competition.
