July 22, 2013-In addition to exciting action on the courts, fields and track, Emporia State student-athletes contributed nearly 4,000 hours of community service to the Emporia area during the 2012-13 school year. The Hornets spent a total of 3,860 hours across the Flint Hills and around the world helping with a wide variety of projects.
The service ranged across all age groups and a variety of events. Youth were helped as teams put on many sports clinics across the area during the school year. Several teams also helped out with Math Nights at are schools and with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Flint Hills. Several teams helped out their fellow Emporia State students on Move In Day and assisted with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Dash at Camp Alexander. Area senior citizens were touched by the Senior Prom, one of the major events each year for Emporia State's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and trips to various senior care facilities by individual teams.
The 3,860 hours were from August 1, 2012 through May 31, 2013 however a number of Hornet student-athletes have stayed in Emporia during the summer thanks in part to a new Summer School Academy, a part of the Creating Champions portion of the Now & Forever Campaign. Many of them will contribute undocumented hours to the Emporia community before teams begin to return in full in the first of August.
