April 2, 2013-The Emporia State women's tennis team used a come from behind win at #2 doubles to propel themselves to a 7-2 win over Washburn on Tuesday afternoon at the Milton Courts. With the win the Hornets improve to 11-4 on the season and 4-3 in the MIAA while the Lady Blues drop to 1-11, 1-4 in the MIAA.
Emporia State got an 8-3 win at #3 doubles by Somer Schmidt and Tiffany Khounsombath followed by a loss at #1 doubles by Nicole Jara and Taylor Smith. The #2 team of Alex Crowe and Kayla Fraley were trailing 7-6, but rallied for a 9-7 win and a 2-1 lead headed into the singles.
Jara and Smith won quickly at #1 and #2 singles while Khounsombath lost at #3, giving the Hornets a 4-2 lead. Jennifer Gerhardt then scored a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win at #4 to secure the win. Crowe and Schmidt closed out the dual with wins at #5 and #6 singles.
Emporia State is back in action on Wednesday at Lincoln. First serve is set for 3:00 p.m. in Jefferson City, Mo.
