CHAMPIONSHIP TIME
The Emporia State men and women both enter the MIAA Championship as the sixth seed. The men will take on Southwest Baptist at 9 a.m. while the women will play Central Oklahoma at 1 p.m. at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo.
LAST TIME OUT
The Emporia State women lost a heartbreaking 5-4 decision at Northwest Missouri. The Hornet women had a 3-0 lead after doubles, but lost five of six singles matches, two of them in three sets. Tiffany Khounsombath and Somer Schmidt won 8-1 at #3 doubles followed by Nicole Jara and Taylor Smith taking an 8-5 win at #1 doubles. Alex Crowe and Kayla Fraley finished the doubles sweep with a 9-7 win at #2. Smith was the only winner for the Hornets in singles, taking #2 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Crowe fell 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 at #5 singles and Schmidt lost 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 to give the Bearcats the win.
The Hornet men ended the regular season with an 8-1 win over Newman at the Milton Courts on Tuesday. The Hornets swept through the doubles to take a 3-0 lead into singles play. Mitchell Kibbe clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #4 singles in his final match on the Milton Courts.
THE?COACH
John Cayton is in his eighth season as the head coach at ESU and ninth season as a collegiate head coach. He is 118-46 with the ESU women and 61-75 with the Hornet men for a combined record of 179-121 at his alma mater. He is a combined 195-135 in nine years as a head coach of men's and women's collegiate tennis. He was named the North Central Region Women's Coach of the Year in 2007 after leading ESU to a 16-3 overall mark, the MIAA Championship and a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16. He has taken three women's teams and two men's teams to the NCAA tournament.
ESU WOMEN AT A GLANCE
The ESU women are 13-6 overall and 6-5 in the MIAA. Nicole Jara was 13-5 at #1 singles with a 6-4 record in MIAA play. Tiffany Khounsombath and Somer Schmidt were 12-5 at #3 doubles with an 8-2 record in MIAA play. The Hornets have used six different doubles combinations this season due to injuries.
SCOUTING UCO WOMEN
The Broncos are 14-2 overall and went 9-2 in their first year in the MIAA. They are ranked 39th in the ITA National Rankings.
LAST VS. UCO
The Emporia State women suffered their first loss of the season with an 8-1 defeat at Central Oklahoma to open MIAA play. Nicole Jara picked up the lone win for the Hornets at #1 singles with a 3-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-6) victory.
ESU MEN AT A GLANCE
The ESU men are 8-11 overall and 0-6 in the MIAA. Senior Mitch Kibbe is 11-8 on the year, 7-5 at the #4 position and went 2-4 in MIAA singles play. All three doubles teams had overall winning records with Andrew Davids and Mat Edwards going 2-4 in MIAA play.
SCOUTING SBU MEN
The Bearcats are 8-9 on the year and went 4-2 in the MIAA. The are ranked #39 in the ITA National Rankings.
LAST VS. SBU
The Hornet men took a point at #3 doubles before falling 8-1 to the #39 Bearcats in Bolivar, Mo. Mitch Kibbe and Kenton Hallowell earned the 8-6 victory for Emporia State.
