April 13, 2013-The Emporia State tennis teams were swept by Northwest Missouri on Saturday in Maryville, Mo.  The women lost a heartbreaking 5-4 decision while the men were swept 9-0 by the Bearcats.

The Hornet women had a 3-0 lead after doubles, but lost five of six singles matches, two of them in three sets, as the Bearcats scored the come from behind victory. 

Tiffany Khounsombath and Somer Schmidt won 8-1 at #3 doubles followed by Nicole Jara and Taylor Smith taking an 8-5 win at #1 doubles.  Alex Crowe and Kayla Fraley finished the doubles sweep with a 9-7 win at #2.

Smith was the only winner for the Hornets in singles, taking #2 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.   Jara at #1, Khounsombath at #3 and Jennifer Gerhardt at #4 all lost in straight sets.  Crowe fell 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 at #5 singles and Schmidt lost 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 to give the Bearcats the win.

The Hornet men were swept in doubles and could not win a set in singles against the #22 Bearcats.

Emporia State is scheduled to play exhibition duals against Johnson County CC on Monday before palying their final regular season matches against Newman on Tuesday at the Milton Courts.
