February 20, 2013-The Emporia State Lady Hornets saw their nine game winning streak come to an end in a 63-60 loss to Pittsburg State in White Auditorium on Wednesday night.
The Hornets jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the game. Pitt State came back to take a 13-12 lead with 11:33 left. There would be a total of five lead changes in the first half before the Gorillas took a six point lead with 2:51 left. The Lady Hornets would end the half on a 7-2 run to trail 29-28 at the half.
A three pointer by Rachel Hanf gave Emporia State a 33-31 lead with 16:16 left in the half to start an 8-0 run. The Gorillas came back to take the lead for good at 45-42 with 9:34 left on Alexa Bordewick's three pointer as the shot clock expired.
Pitt State extended their lead to eight on three occassions the last at 59-51 with 3:46 left. Emporia State answered with a 7-0 run with the last coming on a layup by Merissa Quick with 2:20 left. Lauren Brown and Quick traded baskets to make it 61-60 Pitt State with 54 seconds left.
Brigit Hesser hit one of two free throws with 21 seconds left to give the Gorillas a 62-60 lead. The Lady Hornets worked the clock down and Quick missed a jumper with two seconds left nad Hesser was fouled with .4 seconds left. She hit one of two free throws for the final score.
Quick ended with a career high 31 points for the Lady Hornets while Rachel Hanf added a double-double of 11 points and ten rebounds.
The Lady Hornets will continue their home stand on Saturday afternoon against Northeastern State. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. The Lady Hornet Alumnae Game will be held at 12 noon and former All-American Alli Volkens will have her jersey retired prior to the tip-off at approximately 3:20 p.m.
