November 8, 2013-The #5 Emporia State Lady Hornets opened their 40th season of competition with a 76-48 win over Indianapolis in the first game of the Division II Tip-off Classic in Anaheim, Calif. 

The Greyhounds, who were ranked #20 in the Division II Bulletin National Preseason Poll and just outside the WBCA Coaches Preseason Top 25,  had a 5-4 lead early but the Lady Hornets would quickly retake the lead and were ahead 45-24 at the half. Emporia State closed the half on a 15-5 run to take the 21 point lead.

Merissa Quick had 14 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks to lead the Lady Hornets who had four players in double figures.  Laura Patrick was the leading scorer with 15 points, Kionna Kellogg added 12 and Megan Holloway scored 11 in her collegiate debut.

After playing the first game of the tournament, Emporia State is back in action on Saturday when they take on Cal. State-East Bay in the final game of day two.  Tip-off is set for 10:30 p.m. (CT) in the Anaheim Convention Center.

NOTES:
Emporia State is now 34-6 all-time in season openers.
