November 30, 2013-The #3 Emporia State Lady Hornets had four players in double figures to post an 81-63 victory over Southwestern on Saturday night on Slaymaker Court in White Auditorium. The Moundbuilders are ranked #14 in the NAIA National Poll.
The Lady Hornets used a 9-0 run to turn a one point lead into a ten point lead at 18-8 with 14:39 left in the first half. Emporia State would push the lead to 20 points at 38-18 with 5:50 left before settling into a 44-33 lead at the break.
The Moundbuilders cut the lead to seven at 49-42 with 17:21 left when the Lady Hornets went on a 14-2 run capped by Haley Parker's three-pointer with 13:16 remaining. A Desiree Wylie layup with 8:57 left gave the Lady Hornets their biggest lead of the night at 70-48.
Laura Patrick led Emporia State with 21 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four blocked shots. She was joined in double figures by Wylie with 14 points and a game high 14 rebounds while Kionna Kellogg scored 11 points and Amber Vandiver added ten points.
The Lady Hornets will begin MIAA play on Saturday, December 7 at Northwest Missouri. Tip-off is now set for 5:30 p.m. at Bearcat Arena in Maryville, Mo. The game time has been moved to 5:30 p.m. due to Northwest Missouri hosting an NCAA Football Playoff Game.
