November 3, 2013-In a battle of teams that advanced to the Sweet 16 in their respective divisions last season #5 Emporia State fell 61-53 to Kansas in Allen Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Hornets jumped out to a 9-2 lead and forced a Jayhawk timeout with 16:28 left in the opening half. A Kelly Moten three-pointer gave Emporia State their biggest lead of the night at 12-4. Kansas then went on a 13-0 run to take a 17-12 lead at the 9:40 mark. A Laura Patrick three with 5:09 left tied the game at 23 for the Lady Hornets. A pair of Rheanna Egli free throws had the Lady Hornets down 33-31 at the half.
The Jayhawks came out of the lockerroom with a 7-0 run over the first two minutes to take a 40-31 lead and forced a Lady Hornet time out. The lead would grow to 14 points on three occassions as Emporia State went 8:14 without a field goal, missing nine field goal attempts from the 13:54 mark to the 5:40 mark. A layup by Quick cut the lead to 59-51 with 1:54 left. The Lady Hornets got the rebound on the next Jayhawk possession. Desiree Wylie missed a three-pointer and Natalie Knight scored in transition to push the lead back to ten points.Â
Quick led the Lady Hornets with 14 points, 14 rebounds and three steals. Patrick had 11 points with a pair of three pointers. CeCe Harper had 15 points to lead four Jayhawks in double figures. Emporia State outrebounded Kansas 45-42 on the night and hit 22 of 24 free throws.
The games start for real for the Lady Hornets on Friday, November 8 at the West Coast Tip-off Classic in Anaheim, Calif. Emporia State will play Indianapolis at the Anaheim Convention Center at 11:00 a.m. Central Time. The Greyhounds were ranked #20 in the D2 Bulletin Preseason Poll and just outside the top 25 in the WBCA Coaches Poll.
