November 23, 2013-The #14 Emporia State football team turn the ball over a season high five times in a 55-13 loss at #5 Minnesota-Duluth on Saturday afternoon.Â
UMD score first on a 55 yard drive by Drew Bauer 44 seconds into the game. Two Eli Kuhns field goals tied the score at 6-6 with 5:39 left in the quarter. Austin Sikorski scored on a 56 yard run to give the Bulldogs a 13-6 lead with 4:12 left in the first. The Hornets answered with a 55 yard pass from Corben Jones to Austin Willis to tie the score with 2:29 left in the opening frame. It was the first action for Willis since injuring his ankle against Missouri Western on Nov. 2.
On the next possession UMD converted a fake punt on fourth and five at their own 29 yard line on the way to a nine play 76 yard scoring drive and a 20-13 lead with 13:14 left in the second quarter. On the next series Jones was intercepted at the Hornets 12 yard line and five plays later the Bulldogs took a 27-13 lead.
UMD made it 34-13 on their only touchdown pass of the day with 3:42 left in the half. Another interception led to the Bulldogs final score of the half, a five yard run by Bauer to make it 41-13 at the half. The Bulldogs added two more rushing touchdowns in the third quarter for the final score of 55-13.
Jones went 12 of 31 for 173 yards and a touchdown to go with five interceptions. Ray Ray Davis ended with four catches for 46 yards while Austin Willis had one catch for 55 yards and a touchdown. The Hornets gave up a season high 476 yards rushing on the day.Â
The Hornets end the season 9-2 and advanced to the NCAA Playoffs for the second time in school history.
