HORNETS LOOK TO EXTEND STREAK

Emporia State will travel to St. Joseph, Mo. to face Missouri Western. The Hornets have defeated the Griffons the last 11 times the two teams have played. It will be the Hornets seventh MIAA match of the season and third on the road.

HORNETS TAME TIGERS 

Emporia State enters the match coming off a 3-1 win over Fort Hays State. The Hornets dropped the first set of the match against FHSU, but came back to sweep the Tigers behind 15 kills on .375 hitting from Carly Spicer.

THE COACHES

Bing Xu is 201-81 in his ninth year as head coach at Emporia State. Xu has led the Hornets to the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament in five of the last eight seasons. In 2008 he led Emporia State to its first MIAA Championship. He is 14-1 against the Griffons.

Marian Carbin  is 6-10 in her first season as head coach at Missouri Western. She is 0-1 against Emporia State.

SCOUTING THE HORNETS  

Emporia State is 8-6 overall and 2-4 in the MIAA. Courtney Haring leads a group of four Hornets who are averaging better than 2.00 kills per set. Haring is averaging 2.71, freshman Josie Williams is averages 2.41, senior Paige Vanderpool is averaging 2.18 kills per set, and in five matches since returning from a concussion senior Brianna Kaiser is averaging 2.40 kills.

SCOUTING THE GRIFFONS

The Griffons are 6-10 overall and 3-2 in the MIAA. Seneca, Kan. native Erica Rottinghaus leads the Griffons with a 3.02 kills per set average. Jordan Chohon currently averages 5.63 assists per set and libero Sarah Faubel is averaging 4.22 digs per set.

SERIES RECORD    

Emporia State leads the all-time series against Missouri Western 41-37 which includes 11 straight wins for the Hornets.

LAST TIME VS. MWSU 

The Hornets defeated the Griffons 3-2 on September 21, at White Auditorium.  Josie Williams led the Hornets will 18 kills in that five-set match.  Courtney Haring had seven blocks, Kelly Holden had 20 digs and Macki Pankratz added 33 assists.

IN THE MIAA    

Carly Spicer and Courtney Haring are both ranked in the Top 10 in the MIAA for  hitting percentage. Spicer is sixth at .333 and Haring is ninth with a .317 percentage. Haring is ranked fifth in the league in blocks with an average of 1.00 per set. Kelly Holden is fifth in the MIAA in digs per set at  4.44 per set.

UP NEXT

The Hornets will participate in the MIAA/GAC Crossover October 11-12 in Joplin, Mo. Emporia State will play South Dakota School of Mines and Harding on Saturday beginning at noon. They will wrap up play with a 9:00 a.m. match against Southeastern Oklahoma on Sunday.
