HORNETS FACE #3 JENNIES
Emporia State finishes a three match homestand against nationally ranked Central Missouri on October 23. The #3 Jennies are 22-0 and 8-0 in the MIAA.
LAST TIME OUT
Paige Vanderpool had 14 kills on .342 hitting and 24 digs as Emporia State won their fifth straight match with a 3-1 victory over Southwest Baptist. Courtney Haring added 13 kills on .524 hitting and five blocks. Katie Deutschmann and Sydney Hartman each delivered 27 assists on the night. Deutschmann nearly had a triple double with nine kills and nine digs as well.
THE?COACHES
Bing Xu is 206-82 in his ninth year as head coach at Emporia State. Xu has led the Hornets to the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament in five of the last eight seasons. In 2008 he led Emporia State to its first MIAA Championship. He is 3-10 against the Jennies.
Flip Piontek is 144-22 in his fifth season at Central Missouri. He has a record of 5-1 against Emporia State.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Emporia State has won five straight to improve to 13-7 overall and 4-4 in the MIAA. Carly Spicer leads the Hornets in kills per set at 2.58. Libero Kelly Holden leads the team in digs at 4.64 per set, while fellow freshman Shayla Cotman has started each match of the current win-streak and is hitting .336 on the season.
SCOUTING THE JENNIES
The #3 Jennies are 22-0 overall, 8-0 in the MIAA and coming off a 3-0 sweep of #11 Washburn. Senior Taylor Goodness leads the Jennies in kills per set at 3.86. Senior Julia Bates leads the MIAA in assists with an 11.27 per set average.
SERIES RECORDS
Central Missouri leads the all-time series between the two programs with a 46-5 record. Emporia State's last win against the Jennies came during the 2009 season. The then ninth ranked Hornets knocked off the then #4 ranked Jennies in five sets 3-2 in White Auditorium.
LAST TIME VS. CENTRAL MISSOURI
Central Missouri defeated Emporia State 3-0 on October 17, 2012 in Warrensburg, Mo. Julia Bates had 40 assists in that match for the Jennies. Katie Deutschmann had nine kills and 19 assists for Emporia State.
IN THE MIAA
The Jennies and Hornets are both currently in the top five in the MIAA in team hitting percentage and kills. Central Missouri leads the MIAA with a .307 hitting percentage while Emporia State is hitting .211 to rank fifth. UCM is averaging 15.14 kills per set to lead the MIAA while ESU is fourth with a 13.55 mark.
