Emporia State will play back-to-back matches this weekend against MIAA foes #5 Nebraska-Kearney Lopers on Friday and the Fort Hays State Tigers on Saturday.
HORNETS DROP TWO ON ROAD
The Emporia State Hornets lost a hard fought five setter to the Pittsburg State Gorillas 25-22, 23-25, 27-29, 25-22, 9-15. That loss followed a four set loss to Central Oklahoma. The two losses leave the Hornets with a 1-3 record in the MIAA. Carly Spicer had 20 kills while Sydney Hartman had 28 assists in the loss to PSU.
THE COACHES
Bing Xu is 200-80 in his ninth year as head coach at Emporia State. Xu has led the Hornets to the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament in five of the last eight seasons. In 2008 he led Emporia State to its first MIAA Championship. He is 0-3 against Nebraska Kearney and 14-1 against Fort Hays.
Rick Squires is 465-61 in his 15th season with the Lopers. He is 3-0 against ESU.
Kurt Kohler is 57-91 in his 5th season with the Tigers. He is 1-7 against ESU.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Emporia State is 7-5 overall and 1-3 in the MIAA. Courtney Haring leads the team with 51 blocks and is hitting .358 on the year. Carly Spicer is averaging 2.58 kills per set and Kelly Holden leads the team defensively with 4.42 digs per set. Macki Pankratz is averaging 5.54 assists per set.
SCOUTING THE LOPERS
The Lopers are 13-1 overall and 3-0 in the MIAA. They are coming off a 3-1 win over South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. They enter the match on an eight-match win streak. Ashley Lietner leads the Lopers with a 4.26 kills per set average. Erin Steele currently averages 11.30 assists.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
The Tigers are 3-9 overall, and 1-4 in the MIAA. Jenna Ulrich leads the team with 52 blocks and Taylor Mares is averaging 2.45 kills per set.
SERIES RECORDS
Nebraska-Kearney leads the all-time series against Emporia State 26-10. UNK took all three matches from Emporia State last season.
The Hornets lead the Tigers 50-26 all-time. The two teams split matches last year with each winning on their own floor.

The Lopers completed a season sweep of the Hornets winning 3-0 in the MIAA Tournament semifinals in Kearney. Emporia State hit just .074 as a team in the match.
