HORNETS HOME FOR TWO

Emporia State plays back-to-back home matches this weekend after sweeping three matches in Joplin, Mo. The 11-7 Hornets begin with a MIAA match against Missouri Southern Friday, October 18, at 7:00 p.m. Emporia State will then host Southwest Baptist in a 7:00 p.m. match on Saturday.

WeEKEND SWEEP IN JOPLIN

Emporia State swept three non-conference matches at the MIAA/GAC Crossover last weekend. The Hornets won all three matches against South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, Harding, and Southeastern Oklahoma State in straight sets.

THE?COACHES

Bing Xu is 204-82 in his ninth year as head coach at Emporia State. Xu has led the Hornets to the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament in five of the last eight seasons. In 2008 he led Emporia State to its first MIAA Championship. He is 13-2 against the Lions and 13-0 against Southwest Baptist.

Rachel Kirkman is in her first season at Missouri Southern and has an overall record of 4-14. This is her first match against ESU.

Kelly Richardson is 66-119 in her sixth season at SBU. She is 0-9 against Emporia State.

SCOUTING THE HORNETS  

Emporia State is 11-7 overall and 2-4 in the MIAA.  Junior, Carly Spicer leads the Hornets in kills per set at 2.63. Freshman Libero Kelly Holden leads the team in digs at 4.41 per set, while fellow freshman setter Macki Pankratz has an assists per set average of 5.53.

SCOUTING THE LIONS

The Lions are 4-15 overall and 0-7 in the MIAA.  Junior Katie Politte leads the Lions with 3.48 kills per set. Sophomore Abby Finder is averaging 8.46 assists per set, and freshman Mikayla Avery leads Missouri Southern at 2.61 digs per set.

SCOUTING THE BEARCATS

Southwest Baptist is 13-6 overall and 3-3 in the MIAA.  Junior Kelsey Frankhauser is sixth in the MIAA with 9.33 assists per set. Sophomore Hannah Blount is averaging 5.13 digs per set which is good for second in the MIAA. Nikki Madoch leads the Bearcats with 2.56 kills per set.

SERIES RECORDS    

Emporia State leads the all-time series against Missouri Southern with a 42-30 edge.

The Hornets are 43-1 all-time against Southwest Baptist with the lone loss coming in 1987 in five sets.

LAST TIME VS. BOTH OPPONENTS

The Hornets defeated the Lions 3-0 in Joplin, Mo. on October 12, 2012. 

Emporia State knocked off Southwest Baptist 3-0 the following day on October 13 in Bolivar, Mo.

UP NEXT

Emporia State will play its third straight home match on Wednesday, Oct. 23 against nationally ranked Central Missouri. The Jennies are currently ranked #4 in the nation. That match with start at 7:00 p.m.
