Sept. 8, 2012 - The Emporia State volleyball team fell to No. 3 Southwest Minnesota State (25-19, 27-25, 25-19) and Upper Iowa (20-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-16, 15-13) on the second day of the Middle of Everywhere Classic in Rolla, Mo. Brianna Kaiser ended the tournament with three double-doubles and Katie Deutschmann recorded a triple-double in the final match as the Hornets fell to 5-3 on the season.
Kaiser led the Hornets with ten kills to go with nine digs in the first match versus Southwest Minnesota State. Meg Schwartz added 15 digs while Courtney Haring, Paige Vanderpool, and Carly Spicer all recorded five kills for the Hornets. Sydney Hartman had 15 assists, while Deutschmann registered six kills and 19 assists.
The Hornets came out in the first set trading the first nine points with the third-ranked Mustangs, which included two blocks from Haring. Southwest Minnesota went on a 10-5 run after the score was tied at 9-9, and held on for a 25-19 victory.
Set two saw 12 ties and six lead changes. Emporia State came from four points down to tie the score at 14-14, when a Vanderpool kill gave the Hornets the lead at 15-14. The score was tied 11 times after 14-14, and the Hornets found themselves on the verge of victory with a 25-24 lead when the Mustangs called timeout. Southwest Minnesota came out of the timeout and reeled off three straight points to capture the set.
The Hornets fell in set three 25-19, unable to mount a rally after the Mustangs went on a 7-2 run to build a 10-4 lead. Kaiser registered five of her 10 kills in the final set.
In the evening match, Deutschmann earned a triple-double with 10 kills, 19 digs, and 25 assists. Kaiser achieved her third double-double of the weekend with 14 kills and 21 digs. Schwartz led all players in the match with 33 digs, increasing her season average to 5.33 digs per set. Vanderpool contributed nine kills and 16 digs while Spicer led the team with 10 block assists.
The Hornets took the first two sets 25-20 and 25-22, hitting .225 and .259 respectively. Emporia State took control of the first set with the score tied at 15-15. Kills by Kaiser, Vanderpool, and Raney Okeson in quick succession along with an Upper Iowa attack error was gave the Hornets a three-point cushion, enough to see out the set.
The match tightened up in the second set as Emporia State never led by more than three points, but won 25-22.
Upper Iowa jumped out to an early 9-3 lead in set three, although the Hornets cut the lead to two at th 18-16 mark. With the Hornets trailing 21-19, the Peacocks scored four of the last five points to secure the first set.
Attack errors proved costly in set four, as the Hornets committed 16, en route to a 25-16 defeat.
The fifth set did not start any better, as Emporia State fell behind 7-3. The Hornets went on a 7-3 rally to tie the score at 10-10, taking a 12-10 lead after Vanderpool and Spicer blocked Upper Iowa's Hailey Brown and a Vanderpool kill. The Peacocks called timeout, which seemed to shift the momentum. Emporia State hit into Upper Iowa's blockers for three straight attacks, giving the Peacocks a 14-13 advantage, which they closed out for a 15-13 win.
Emporia State travels to No. 7 Washburn for the Turnpike Tussle on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
