September 25, 2012- Emporia State swept its fourth straight volleyball match with a 25-14, 25-20, 25-20 victory over Newman in Wichita, Kan. With the win, the Hornets improved their record to 9-4, the Jets fell to 3-8.
Katie Deutschmann posted a double-double with 12 kills and 21 assists. Brianna Kaiser added 10 kills and seven digs. Meg Schwartz led the Hornets in digs with nine, while Sydney Hartman assisted on 23 kills.
As a team, Emporia State hit .473 for the match, while holding Newman to a .138 hitting percentage.
Emporia State jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in set one, and forced the Newman to take a timeout with the Hornets ahead 17-10. The Hornets closed out the set on an 8-4 run, which included a long rally on set point.
The Jets rose their level of play in set two, staying close to the Hornets throughout the set. Emporia State took a timeout once it saw its lead cut to two points at 13-11. Defense spurred the Hornets through the rest of the set, as Newman had difficulty putting the ball away.
The Hornets opened the final set by jumping out to an 8-2 lead which set the tone for the rest of the set. Newman was unable to find a way into the set, as the Hornets took the last set 25-11.
The Hornets return to MIAA play when they face #1 Nebraska-Kearney on Friday in Kearney. First serve from the Health and Sports Center is scheduled for 6 p.m.
