Sept. 15, 2012 – The Emporia State volleyball team continued its excellent record versus Missouri Western with a 3-0 sweep in St. Joseph, Mo. The Hornets improved to 6-4, 1-1 on the season.
The Hornets won in straight sets 28-26, 25-23, 25-20.
Morgan Buckner led the Hornets in kills with 14. Katie Deutschmann earned a double-double with 11 kills and 27 assists. Paige Vanderpool contributed a team high 20 digs to go along with seven kills. Brianna Kaiser narrowly missed out on a double-double with nine kills and 13 digs. Libero Meg Schwartz tallied 13 digs. Courtney Haring led the team with nine total blocks, two solo and seven block assists.
The Hornets took the first set 28-26, after rallying from 16-12 down. Buckner and Deutschmann had five kills in the first set, Deutschmann also added nine assists.
The second set was closer with six lead changes and 11 ties. Buckner accounted for three of the final five Emporia State points in set two.
Emporia State hit .333 with 15 kills from 33 attempts in set three. With the scores tied 14-14, the Hornets scored six straight points to take control of the set.
The Hornets are in action next in the home opener versus Central Oklahoma on Sept. 21 at White Auditorium. The match has a 7 p.m. start time.
