August 31, 2012 - Juniors Brianna Kaiser and Paige Vanderpool registered 11 kills and 13 digs each to lead Emporia State to a 3-1 (17-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-23) win over Harding at the Pitt State Volleyball Classic.
The Hornets remain unbeaten in 2012, improving to 3-0. Harding falls to 1-2.
Meg Schwartz recorded double-digits in digs with 19. Courtney Haring and Carly Spicer had identical totals with nine kills and five block assists apiece. Emporia State used both setters to great effect, Sydney Hartman had 26 assists while Katie Deutschmann eight kills to her 20 assists.
Mollie Arnold had 14 kills to lead Harding.
The Hornets dropped set one 17-25 after falling behind early, and was unable to sustain any prolonged run. Harding closed the set by reeling off five straight points.
Emporia State seemed to find its legs in set two, and led from the start to take the set 25-18.
The third set was closer, although the Hornets emerged with a 25-19 win. A Katie Deutschmann kill with the score tied 12-12 set off a 6-2 run giving the Hornets some separation and a lead they did not relinquish.
In the closely contested fourth set, Harding went on a 5-1 run with the scores tied at 16-16. Trailing 17-21, Emporia State called a timeout and rallied for six straight points, with three kills courtesy of Raney Okeson. Harding was unable to stop the Hornets, as Sydney Hartman’s ace secured the match for the Hornets, 25-23.
Emporia State plays its final match at the Pitt State Volleyball Classic today at 4 p.m. versus Northwestern Oklahoma State.
