Men play Truman, women take on Ft. Hays State

ESU Championship Notes

CHAMPIONSHIP TIME
The Emporia State women enter the MIAA Championship as the fourth seed while the Hornet men come in as the #5 seed.  The men will take on Truman at 1 p.m. while the women will play Ft. Hays State at 5 p.m. at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Mo.

LAST TIME OUT
The Emporia State women picked up victories in three of the final four singles matches to pull out a 5-4 win at Newman on Wednesday afternoon.  The Hornet men also won three singles matches but were shut out in doubles as they fell 6-3 to the Jets in Wichita.
The ESU women took a 2-1 lead after doubles but fell behind after the first two singles matches before Somer Schmidt gave ESU the win with a 6-3, 7-5 win at #6 singles.
The Hornet men trailed 3-0 after doubles but were able to pick up wins at the #2, #3 and #4 positions to pull within 4-3.  The Jets won at #5 and #6 to secure the win.

THE?COACH
John Cayton is in his seventh season as the head coach at ESU and eighth season as a collegiate head coach.  He is 104-38 with the ESU women and 53-63 with the Hornet men for a combined record of 157-101 at his alma mater.  He is a combined 173-115 in eight years as a head coach of men's and women's collegiate tennis. He was named the North Central Region Women's Coach of the Year in 2007 after leading ESU to a 16-3 overall mark, the MIAA Championship and a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16. He has taken three women's teams and two men's teams to the NCAA tournament.

ESU WOMEN AT A GLANCE
The ESU women are 15-6 overall and 4-3 in the MIAA. Sophomore Nicole Jara went 18-1 at #1 singles with a perfect 6-0 mark in MIAA play while freshman Taylor Smith was 13-6 at #2 singles.  The two combined to go 15-5 at #1 doubles on the season.  Sophomore Abby Morris is 13-4 at the #6 spot with a 4-2 mark in MIAA play.

SCOUTING FHSU WOMEN
The Tigers are 6-8 overall and 3-4 in the MIAA.  

LAST VS. FHSU
The Emporia State women's tennis team opened MIAA play with a 6-3 win at Ft. Hays State. ESU opened the day taking two of three doubles matches before going to singles play.  Nicole Jara continued her outstanding season at #1 singles winning 6-0, 6-4 over Camille Caron-Benard.  ESU also got wins at #4 by Alex Crowe, #5 by Emily Huston and #6 by Abby Morris.

ESU MEN AT A GLANCE
The ESU men are 6-9 overall and 0-4 in the MIAA.  Junior Mitch Kibbe is 8-7 on the year, 7-7 at the #3 position and recorded the Hornets only singles win in MIAA play.

SCOUTING TSU MEN
The Bulldogs are 5-7 on the year and 1-3 in the MIAA.  

LAST VS. TRUMAN
The ESU men fell 7-2 to Truman in Kirksville, Mo. Mitch Kibbe had a hand in both wins for the Hornet men.  He won 6-4, 6-3 at #3 singles and teamed with Matt VanHorn to win 8-6 at #2 doubles.
