ESU women win, men lose at Newman

April 18, 2012-The Emporia State women picked up victories in three of the final four singles matches to pull out a 5-4 win at Newman on Wednesday afternoon.  The Hornet men also won three singles matches but were shut out in doubles as they fell 6-3 to the Jets in Wichita.

The ESU women took a 2-1 lead after doubles as the #1 team of Nicole Jara and Taylor Smith and the #3 team of Emily Huston and Abby Morris both picked up 8-6 victories.  The Hornets fell behind after the first two singles matches as Jara dropped her first dual match of the year 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) to Kirstie Symon and Smith fell to Hillary Hicks 6-0, 6-1. Alex Crowe pulled ESU back even with a 6-4, 6-4 win at #4 and Tiffany Khounsombath gave ESU the lead with a 6-4, 5-7, 10-7 win at #3 singles.  Newman evened the match Abby Morris lost to Carissa Villaflor 6-0, 7-5 at #5 before Somer Schmidt gave ESU the win with a 6-3, 7-5 win at #6 singles.

The Hornet men trailed 3-0 after doubles but were able to pick up wins at the #2, #3 and #4 positions to pull within 4-3.  Matt Edwards was leading 6-4, 4-3 at #2 when Chris Copenhaver retired for NU. Mitch Kibbe won 2-6, 6-1, 10-5 at #3 and Matt Van Horn picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win at #4 singles. The Jets won at #5 and #6 to secure the win.

The next action for both the men and women will be the MIAA Tournament beginning on Friday at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Mo.
