March 28, 2012-Despite playing without two regulars, the Emporia State women's tennis team made quick work of Missouri Western on Wednesday, defeating the Griffons 9-0 at the Milton Courts on the ESU campus.
The Hornets dropped just four games total in doubles competition, winning 8-1 at #1, 8-2 at #2 and 8-1 at #3, to head into singles play ahead 3-0. ESU played without regular #3 doubles team of Abby Morris and Emily Huston due to injuries and illness. Tiffany Khounsombath and Somer Schmidt made their first appearance together of the season at #3 doubles and won eight straight games after dropping the first game.
Nicole Jara moved to 13-0 on the season with a 6-0, 6-0 win over MWSU's Nicole Kerr at #1 singles. Taylor Smith then clinched the match for the Hornets with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ceara Boldridge at #2 singles. Somer Schmidt would make her first appearance in a dual match this season and came away with a 6-1, 6-1 win at #6 singles over Katie Field.
The Hornets are back in action on Friday when they play host to Neb.-Kearney. First serve for the men's and women's duals will be at 12 noon at the EHS Courts.
