ESU Defeats Ft. Hays State 73-64

February 25, 2012-Heather Robben scored 25 points on nine of 12 shooting to lead the #22 Emporia State Lady Hornets to a 73-64 win over Ft. Hays State in Hays, Kan.  With the win the Lady Hornets secured the three seed in next weekend's MIAA Tournament in Kansas City, Mo.

Neither team led by more than five points in the first half as FHSU took a 23-18 lead with 6:21 left in the opening frame.  ESU came right back with a 10-0 run to go ahead 28-23 with 4:!4 left.  Robben had six points during the run with a three-pointer and old fashioned three point play. The Tigers answered with a 5-0 run of their own to tie the game at 28 with 3:06 left in the half and neither team would score the rest of the period.

FHSU scored the first four points of the second half and the teams traded leads until ESU went on a 6-0 run capped by a Robben jumper with 10:20 left for a 45-40 lead.  The Lady Hornets would not trail again and eventually pushed the lead to ten points on two occassions. ESU hit seven of eight free throws in the final 54 seconds to seal the win.

Robben was joined in double figures by Jocelyn Cummings with 15 points. Kelsey Balcom and Merissa Quick led ESU with nine rebounds while Balcom had a career best four blocked shots.

ESU will play Truman at 8:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 1 in the first round of the MIAA Tournament.

NOTES:
Rachel Hanf tied Jamie Augustyn for seventh in career three-pointers at ESU with her 137th.
ESU has finished in the top three of the MIAA regular season in 14 of the last 15 seasons.
