February 22, 2012 -- The Emporia State men's basketball team shot .632 in the second half, but came up shy of a comeback against Washburn in a 68-60 loss in the Turnpike Tussle. ESU shot .625 from behind the three point line as they narrowed WU's lead to six in the second half.
Washburn jumped out early taking the lead at the 17:01 mark in the first half. Washburn would shoot .464 as they jumped out to a 33-19 halftime lead. ESU would fall behind by as much as 15 points in the second half before the Hornets started their push. Trailing 48-33 the Hornets would use a 19-10 run to cut the lead to six points with just 2:12 to play. That is as close as ESU would get though as Washburn would hit five of six free throws down the stretch to close out the game.
The Hornets were led by Tola Lawal who finished with 21 points and five rebounds for ESU. Chris Sights added 11 points for the Hornets while Antonio DiMaria added 10 points. Chris Simmons in his final game in White Auditorium had a career high eight rebounds. Troy Pierce added seven points and four rebounds as all four Hornet seniors were honored before the game.
The Hornets will return to the floor at Feb. 25 when they travel to Fort Hays State for a scheduled 8 p.m. tip-off from Hays, Kan.
