November 9, 2012 – The Emporia State volleyball team fell in a five set thriller to #13 Truman 25-20, 27-29, 25-14, 18-25, 15-12 at White Auditorium in Emporia, Kan. Paige Vanderpool registered a double-double with 20 kills and 13 digs, while Meg Schwartz added 32 digs.
Raney Okeson and Brianna Kaiser each accounted for 12 kills in the match. Katie Deutschmann posted 38 assists, 13 digs, and added six kills. Courtney Haring was the leader in total blocks with six, and added nine kills. Vanderpool also led Emporia State with a .348 hitting percentage.
Truman took the first set 25-20. The two teams were tied at 16-16 before three kills from Abby Heise gave the Bulldogs the lead and forced an Emporia State timeout. Truman held on, despite three kills late in the set by Okeson.
Set two went to extra points, and saw three lead changes. Emporia State stormed back after being down 17-22, going on a 12-5 run to capture the set. The Emporia State rally was keyed by two service aces. Sydney Hartman to give the Hornets a 26-25 lead, while Vanderpool’s lone ace gave the Hornets a 29-27 win.
The Bulldogs never trailed in the third set and held Emporia State to a -.062 hitting percentage in the set.
Emporia State got off to a fast 8-2 start and hit for their highest percentage on the night at .368 to force a fifth and decisive set.
The final set saw 12 ties and six lead changes as the two teams traded points. The score was tied at 12-12 when
Truman took the lead through a service error and a kill from Allie Brak. Vanderpool’s attempt was then blocked to give Truman the match.
Both teams had a good night at the net, where Truman held a 15-12 advantage in blocks.
Emporia State is now 18-11, 8-8 MIAA. Truman is now 26-5, 14-3 MIAA.
Emporia State completes its regular season when it faces Lindenwood tomorrow on Senior Night. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from White Auditorium.
